Communications Assistant
Description
The KCC Communications Assistant supports the work of the Communications Lead in promoting the goals of the organization by planning, drafting, designing, and engaging with the public both online and in person.
Time commitment
Approximately 10-15 hours per month.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the limited supervision of the Communications Lead, the Assistant will
Draft, design, and edit blog posts, social media posts, letters to the editor, press releases, discussion board posts, and other communications
Recommend campaign themes, content and audiences for KCC’s work
Monitor and post regarding special days and community events of interest to the KCC audience
Support the work of the organization by regularly monitoring KCC accounts online
Review, respond and organize online comments as appropriate
Review and report on website and social media analytics on a monthly basis, with recommendations for improving reach and engagement
Draft letters to the editor, articles, blog posts, newsletter items and social media posts in support of the goals of the organization
Develop materials to disseminate information about city-wide public consultations, working groups, educational events, webinars, and networking events
Review and maintain mailing and media lists
Attend regularly scheduled meetings with the Directors and/or Communications Lead to provide updates on work progress
Assistant may be tasked with arranging and assisting with occasional media interviews, presentations, or dialogues with community members by the Directors
Knowledge and skills
Some knowledge of, and interest in, climate science, local government institutions and processes, and climate policy
Awareness of, sensitivity to, and appreciation for issues relating to Indigenous communities and climate justice
Exercise of discretion in sharing KCC internal communications or access settings
Experience working in a digital workplace, including web-based document and information storage, meeting platforms (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet), Wix website and email systems, Facebook pages, Instagram, MeetUp, G-Suite for document creation, data analysis and collaboration, WhatsApp and/or Discord and/or other online discussion tools (Slack)
Knowledge of and experience with graphic design using online tools.
Writing, editing, and crafting appealing messages for the public using correct English spelling, grammar and vocabulary
Excellent communication skills in writing, oral presentation and design
Strong social, organizational and time management skills
Exercise of good judgement in public relations
Ability to work independently and in a team
Education and/or certification required
High School graduate with 1-2 years work experience in a related field
